He's doing great! He measures in at 32.25 inches in length (50th percentile), weighs in at 24 lbs., 12 oz. (35th percentile), and has a head circumference of 19 inches (70th percentile).
Since he's not talking yet, she suggested we see a speech therapist for an evaluation. Basically, see an expert and get his/her opinion on whether or not he needs speech therapy. Of course just tonight, he said "Mama" and looked directly at me, so technically now we're hoping this is the start of "officially" talking, so we'll likely hold off for a few days to track his progress.
He received several immunizations, and cried more when we set him on the table than when he actually received the injections. He is scheduled for his next appointment at 24-months.
He developed a cough and runny nose yesterday. There really isn't anything you can do for the poor kiddo. The virus just has to run it's course. Thankfully the appointment coincided with the illness, so she checked him for ear infections and the like just to make sure the cold wasn't something more serious.
Due in part to his lack of talking, we decided to try to teach him some baby sign language last week. We were surprised to see how quickly he is picking it up. In just a matter of a few days, he confidently uses the signs for: more, please, book, milk, water, and all done. We'll likely continue to introduce signs as he seems to enjoy using them and picks them right up, but hopefully he'll start using (more?) words soon once he completely realizes that he can communicate with us beyond pointing and grunting.
Personality wise, Daniel is quiet and shy. He's developed stranger danger and often clings to one of us if he's unfamiliar with someone or in a new situation. He is also very loving. He frequently like to give us hugs out of the blue. It melts my heart! He snuggles with us right before he goes to bed in his crib and has discovered he likes Mommy's hair when we cuddle. I try to remind him to be gentle. :)
We're working on potty training. We have him sit on the potty once a day just to try to get him used to it. Originally we tried a few days of putting forth real effort to potty train him. He went several times successfully, but for some reason he started to get scared once the pee starts coming out. We took that as a sign that he's not quite ready for potty training, despite his interest and understanding of the process. He does usually point to his potty when he's going in his diaper, and will sometimes ask to sit on it. So, we're keeping the potty chairs out and available, but taking a more relaxed approach.
Overall, we're happy to report he's an awesome kid! We love watching him grow into a more independent, opinionated, and loving toddler. We are blessed!
