Yep, you read that right. Baby Gilliam #2 is a girl!
Yesterday I went for my second trimester screening/ultrasound. We told the ultrasound technologist that we were very interested in finding out the gender of the baby. She looked around for a while, took some measurements, showed us some different body parts (leg, brain, arm, etc.) then blurted out, "It looks like a girl!" Bobby and I both shed a few tears, and when we told Daniel he was going to have a little sister, he looked up from the Kindle (he was watching Sesame Street), and then looked right back down. I didn't really expect jumping up and down from him. :)
All of her measurements came in fine. The risk for Down Syndrome and other birth defects went down considerably (not that there was really any worry from the first trimester screening). The doctor said we should "try to find something else to worry about," and smiled. I took that to mean things like how to decorate the nursery. :)
We've decided to keep her name a secret like we did with Daniel, revealing it on her birthday. For now we plan on referring to her as Little Sister.
We are really thrilled! Boy or girl, we knew we wanted a sibling for Daniel. Now we know he'll have a little sister! Here are a couple ultrasound pictures of Little Sister:

Friends Visit
Over Memorial Day weekend, our good friends Mark and Latsamy, and their two girls Elizabeth and Catherine, came down from Des Moines for a visit. Daniel was a great host (for the most part - he had some issues with sharing his favorite toys...), and we had a ton of fun. Outings included the Zoo, the Aquarium (and nearby water fountains), the library for story time, Kansas City BBQ for dinner, Lowe's, and lots of time spent watching the kids play at the house. It was a great time and we look forward to getting together again with them soon!

Allergies
Months ago, Daniel had a cough. It wasn't too bad, but it seems to particularly bother him at night. It wasn't long after having a cold, so we didn't think too much of it. About the time we were ready to take him in to the doctor, it got better. Over the next few months, we started noticing a pattern. He would have a few weeks where he was fine, and then a week or two where he would cough during the night. We also started noticing that he would cough quite a bit when he was out of breath, after running around and playing, etc. But then after a week or two of it, he'd be fine again.
If you Google these symptoms (I know, I know), the first and most obvious thing that comes up is Asthma and Allergies. We started paying a bit more attention. We noticed when Daniel would roll around on the couch, he would often break out a little bit with some contact dermatitis. He continued to cough a lot when he was out of breath, and occasionally at night, but otherwise was a very happy, normal toddler.
A couple of weeks ago, Daniel, being silly, was lying down in the dog bed. Almost immediately he started sneezing, eyes watering, nose running, etc. Finally, we decided to take him to the doctor.
Last Friday we saw his pediatrician and described all of the symptoms to her. Her thought was that he was likely allergic to something in the environment, and may have asthma. He's too young to do any meaningful test for asthma at this point, so we decided to start with an allergy test. The following Monday, Amy took him in for them to draw his blood. He was a champ - no crying at all. He didn't even flinch. Both the doctor and the phlebotomist were amazed. They'd never seen a kid his age do so well for a blood draw. We were very proud parents.
Yesterday, the results came back. The test looks mostly at environmental allergies. The results are a scale of 0 to 6:
0: Normal
1: Low level allergy
2: Moderate level allergy
3: High level allergy
4-5: Very high level allergy
6: Extreme allergy
Daniel was a 4 for dogs, 3 for cats and mold, and a 1 for oak trees. Also, his current general allergy level was quite high. So, tonight, we started him on Singulair. It treats both allergies and asthma. We'll watch him for a couple of weeks and then call the doctor and decide if we will keep him on it or not. I like this idea because if he does have asthma as well as allergies, this treats it too. We also have some children's Zyrtec to give him for flair ups if necessary. We aren't getting rid of the dogs or anything that drastic, but we will pay extra attention to keeping them off his bed, out of his room as much as possible, and keeping him out of their beds.
I'll be honest, this is a bummer for us. Not only because of how much we love and want to be able to have dogs long-term, but because Daniel loves them so much too. But, ultimately this is just a minor setback and we're very hopeful that the medicine will control everything well. And of course he'll continue to be our very happy, crazy little boy.

Big Trucks, Babysitting, Zoo, Haircut, Squirrel!
Yesterday morning, we went to the Lee's Summit Public Works Big Truck show. They have construction equipment available for kids to climb around on and explore. Daniel was a little hesitant at first, but once we talked him into sitting in one of them, he had to sit in all of them. It was a fun way to spend a Saturday morning:

Also on Saturday, we had another big event. For the first time since Daniel was born, we had a non-family babysitter watch him. Kennedy, one of his "friends" from across the street, came to watch him for a couple of hours so Mommy and Daddy could have a nice kid-free lunch and run a few errands. Daniel absolutely adores Kennedy, and they had a really great time together. I'm sure we'll be taking advantage of her babysitting services a lot more often now!
Today, we went to the zoo. We had a really great time seeing all of Daniel's favorite animals: polar bears, penguins, giraffes, zebras, lions, flamingos, elephants... He really knows his way around there now, it's fun to watch him run from exhibit to exhibit. Unfortunately, we forgot to bring the camera. Amy did take this picture with her phone - it shows off Daniel's new haircut. We definitely miss his curls, but his hair was starting to get more-than-a-little out of control. I'm sure the curls will grow back in over the coming months.
And, finally, here is one of Trixie's most exciting moments from the weekend:

Fun videos
We read with Daniel in the morning when he wakes up, before nap time, and before bedtime. (We are so grateful for a good library system!) With all this practice, Daniel is pretty good at memorizing books. In this video, you'll see how he "reads" Puppies by Laura Ellen Anderson to us:
(Translation: Some dogs are big; Some dogs are small; Doggies chase cats; Doggies bark; Doggies fetch; Doggies make a mess; Doggies dig; Doggies chew; Doggies swim; Doggies tug; Doggies gobble up food; Doggies nuzzle; Doggies cuddle up and sleep.)
And here is a quick video of a little game Daddy and Daniel play. He gets distracted about halfway through when he decides he needs to check inside the Easter egg to see if it has candy or water in it:

Trip to DSM/Mother's Day
Last weekend we traveled to Des Moines for several family members birthdays and Mother's Day with our families. It was great to spend time with everyone. Here are several photos from the trip:
I had a great Mother's Day! Daniel and Bobby always know how to make me feel special, and Mother's Day was no exception. I'm glad I got to spend part of it with my grandma and mom (and my sister since it was her birthday too!).

Family Visit
Last weekend, Grandmommy, Dondon (and Buster and Misty), Uncle Gene, and Aunt Mary Jo all came down to visit. Daniel had a really great time playing with them and we loved having them here. He was a great host, showing them the important things in the house (the laundry and his green light), gifting them with flowers (dandelions) from the yard, and being his normal, silly self. It was a great visit!
